Every
day I wake up and am full of energy. I cannot wait to get to
the shop and build my current work. Much of the excitement is
about watching the furniture come to life. Watching the design
emerge from an idea to a drawing to a finished piece is thrilling.
An
instrumental part in building exciting furniture is in finding
extraordinary & unique wood. This is a favorite part of
my job - treasure hunter. I spend much of my time at the start
of a project hand picking lumber to find the right grain for
your piece. Most furniture is made of readily available material.
The furniture that comes from my shop is made of treasured wood.
My
goal is to create beautiful and functional works of art. I can
credit myself for the function, because this is part of good
design, but beauty only partly. Some of the beauty is in the
simplicity of my design. Most of the beauty is already in the
wood. The aim is to build furniture that you will treasure more
and more as time passes. Since you live with these pieces, I
am very careful and considerate to your needs.
Not
only should my furniture attract the viewer from across the
room but it should also be lasting in its design genre as well
as structural integrity. How long is lasting? Long past many
generations to follow you and I. Much of the things we buy today
are expendable or faddish and in most circumstances, we do not
expect them to last very long. Each of my pieces is built with
traditional joinery & finish techniques found in the finest
antiques built centuries ago still in use today. Drawers are
dovetailed, cases are assembled with mortise & tenon joints,
all of the work is hand polished and finished with five to eight
coats of oil. This is a very lasting but labor intensive process.
The result is a very strong beautiful piece displaying the wood
grain without a plastic look. This finish process is also the
most user friendly. The maintenance is simple and is the easiest
to repair if damaged.
There
is nothing more pleasing than purchasing a hand crafted work
of art for your home or office. It is a wonderful feeling to
live with furniture that has a life of its own and to experience
its joy repeatedly. Let me know what I should carve my name
in for you.
